The application of power electronic thyristor valves in HVDC and SVC technologies has enabled the development of controllable series devices with rapid response for use in electric power transmission systems. With growing environmental, regulatory and financial constraints facing the electric utility industry, technical advancements and economic solutions which allow increased utilization and relaible operation of transmission systems have potential benefits for utilities and their customers.
