Provides a system for specifying the enclosures of electrical equipment on the basis of the amount of protection that the enclosure gives. Applies to enclosures where the rated voltage of the equipment inside the enclosure is not greater than 72.5 kV. Protection covered by this system includes: protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful ingress of water; protection of persons against contact with or approach to live parts and against contact with moving parts ( other than smooth rotating shafts and the like) inside the enclosure and equipment protection against ingress of solid foreign bodies. Does not specify degrees of protection against risk of explosions, mechanical damage of the equipment, corrosive vapours, conditions such as moisture, fungus or vermin.
