The purpose of determining compression set by the method specified is to establish the extent to which elastomers retain their elastic properties after prolonged compression at constant strain and at a given temperature. The test method is applicable to specimens having a hardness of 30 to 95 Shore A or IRHD. It may be used, for example, to assess the viscoelastic behaviour of seals and floor coverings, damping elements for machinery, and shock absorbers of all types. The method is also suitable for assessing the state of vulcanization. Behaviour on freezing can be determined and crystallization properties investigated by applying the method at temperatures below ambient temperature (for other relevant test methods, see DIN 53545).
