Specifies requirements for the implementation, development and maintenance of environmental management systems meant to ensure compliance with state environmental policy or objectives. Does not establish specific environmental performance criteria. Applies to any organization that wants to: assure itself of compliance with a stated environmental policy and demonstrate such compliance to others. All the elements specified in this standard are meant to be incorporated into any environmental management system. How far any one element will be applied depends on factors such as the conditions in which the organization operates, its environmental policy and the nature of its activities. Complements BS 5750 and the draft European Community Eco-Audit Regulation (Version 3, December 1991).
