This method is designed to give a measure of the tendency of new, inhibited, mineral insulating oils to oxidize by measurement of an induction period. It can also be used to obtain information on the acid and sludge-forming tendency of the oil before or after the end of the induction period. The method is only intended for testing the continuity of oil supplies. The results do not necessarily provide information of the performance in service. It employs the same apparatus and a similar procedure to those used to determine the oxidation stability of Inhibited Mineral Turbine Oil (IP 280). It differs from this test in that a solid copper metal catalyst is used, and the duration of the test is equal to the induction period or 236 h whichever is the shorter.
