With a view to preventing failures this documents serves to describe how critical damage can occur in the field and the measures that should be taken to avoid such damage. Typical problems are illustrated to show the defects that can be introduced by inappropriate treatment and construction practices, to indicate the possible long term effects of such defects and to assist in their identification to facilitate the rigourous inspection of composite insulators prior to line commissioning.
