The methods of test specified serve to determine the behaviour of elastomers excluding cellular plastics, when exposed to fluids (i.e. liquids and gases) and vapours ('test agents', for short). May be used both for testing for quality assurance purposes, for monitoring the long-term behaviour of the material and for developing new rubbers and elastomers resistant to fluids and vapours. The test conditions described are intended to provide the basis for selecting the appropriate ones for the particular case, or to agree on such considerations.
