Gives a reference method (Standard Test) for the detectionand enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliform bacteriain water for human consumption. The Standard Test is basedon membrane filtration, subsequent culture on a differentialagar medium and calculation of the number of target organismsin the sample. Also includes a rapid method (Rapid Test) forthe detection of E. coli only within 24 h in water for humanconsumption, which can be useful in special cases wheninformation is needed quickly. The Rapid Test is based onmembrane filtration, subsequent culture under selectiveconditions and calculation of the number of E.coli inthe sample.
