This document specifies a method for specifying decorative and protective anodic oxide coatings on aluminum (including aluminum-based alloys). It defines the characteristics of anodically generated oxide layers, specifies methods for checking the characteristic properties, specifies minimum performance requirements, provides information on the quality of the aluminum suitable for anodizing and addresses the importance of a pretreatment to ensure the required appearance or the structure of the finished workpiece. It does not apply to a) non-porous anodic oxide coatings that act as a barrier layer; b) anodized oxide films formed by anodizing with chromium or phosphoric acid; c) anodically produced oxide layers
